Shohin bonsai is a type of bonsai characterised by its size. Shohin trees are up to 25cm tall and they should be able to be held on one's palm comfortably. The word Shohin in japanese means "small goods" referring to the fact that these are very small bonsai trees.
The care and maintenance of shohin trees tend to be more challenging than larger bonsai. They require more attention because they sit in smaller pots. They dry out very easily due to
wind or sun and often need to be placed under partial shade to avoid overheating by full sun.
Sitting the trees on trays with gravel and water also helps in maintaining a humid
environment. Shohin trees generally need at least a couple of watering sessions per day in
hot summer days.
Most of the techniques applied to larger bonsai can be used for shohin, however the
execution tends to be more difficult on shohin, Another important difference is that there is
less room for error, so it is important to think through before cutting branches and performing different techniques.
Growing and training Shohin bonsai is a rewarding hobby that brings you joyfulness from
daily care and peaceful meditation when working on these graceful miniature trees.
